Dude. Today was frickin awesome!
The short version:
My mom, her best friend and I went up on the train to New York to see Spamalot on Boradway.
The scattered details:
Some may have heard there is a transit strike in NYC that started today. Not a problem since everything is in walking distance. But it caused Spamalot to start late. at 2 when it should have started, they came on the annoucer to say it was delayed to 2:15 because two actors had gotten stuck because of the strike. At 2:20, no show but, dude, Eric Idle himself came out to entertain us for a few minutes while we waited. The guy is a comic genius, as he was just standing there talking to about he had no idea what was going on but they had asked him to do. But when he says it, it's funny. "You and I both have something in common. We have no idea what I'm going to say next! But since I have no shame, that's alright!" Of course his first joke was he'd come on behalf of the New York Transit strike. Then he dragged Hank Azaria out, half in costume to ham with him. So frikin funny.
Then in the second act, during the whole Lancelot scene in the tower with the 'fair maiden', Hank Azaria, who played Lancelot was yelling at the father, the one who keeps saying to stop singing, and a huge spit wad came out. There was a pregeant pause and Azaria goes, "I so mad I'm spitting my verbs at you!" And then went into a disco song and dance number about how Lancelot is gay and had a sparkly codpiece.
The whole thing was hilarious. The French guys were flicking off the English during the taunting scene. The whole thing was campy, the sets looked like the Monty Python animations, or in other words like they were cobbled together in an afternoon. The dancing was like those white guys at dances who think they can dance. The campyness was what made it absolutely brilliant. The fanged rabbit was a puppet and they did the Black Knight scene, cutting off limbs and everything! And Camelot was like Vegas, the round table a roulette wheel. What happens in Camelot, stays in Camelot ;)
Oh and David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin? *dies* The Jew song was so much better then I expected!
And I got to go to the biggest Toys R Us in the world! DUDE! Good day!
